THE WOOD-CUTTER AND RIVER GOD

                THE WOOD-CUTTER AND RIVER GOD

Story: One day a wood-cutter was cutting a tree beside a river. Suddenly his axe slipped out of his hand and fell into the river. The wood-cutter then became very unhappy and began to cry bitterly. At this, the river-good felt pity for him. He appeared before the wood-cutter with a golden axe and said, “is this axe yours? “The honest wood-cutter said ,” No, it is not mine. “ Next the god dived into the water and brought up a silver axe and said to the wood-cutter, “is this axe yours? “He again said, “No it is not my axe, sir. “At last, the river-god brought up the iron axe which the wood-cutter lost and said to him “Is this yours? “Now the wood-cutter became very glad and said to the river-god, “yes, sir, this is exactly the axe I have lost”. The river-god became pleased at the honesty of the wood-cutter and gave him his axe along with the other axes. Then the river-god disappeared.
