In 2154, humans depleted the earth's natural resources, leading to an acute energy crisis. The Resources Development Administration (RDA) has discovered a valuable mineral mine in Pandora called Unbutanium, orbiting a dense forest-dwelling moon polyphemas, a fictional gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system. Pandora, whose atmosphere is toxic to humans, is inhabited by Na'vi, a 10-foot-tall (3.0 m), blue-skinned, intelligent humanoid who lives in harmony with nature and worships the mother goddess Eva.

To explore the Pandora's biosphere, scientists use a navel-human hybrid called the "Avatar", which is powered by genetically matched humans. Moat frees Jake and Grace, but they are detached from their incarnations and captured by Quarich's forces. Pilot Trudy Chacon, annoyed by Quarrich's brutality, frees Jake, Grace and Norm and takes them to Grace's outpost, but Grace shoots Quarrich while fleeing.
