A passport is an official document that serves as proof of citizenship and permits international travel. Whether you are traveling on vacation, attending a meeting or conducting business, you need a passport to enter a foreign land. One can apply for a passport from anywhere in India, select the Regional Passport Office (RPO) of one's choice and submit one's application form at the desired Passport Seva Kendra. A passport serves multiple purposes. It serves as an identity and nationality proof. It can also be used as proof of date of birth and address and submitted or used for many official purposes. But the most important thing is that it is not possible to go abroad without a passport. Citizens need to visit Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) to get a new passport. But it is very easy to apply for a passport without going to the passport center.

Types of Indian passports and their validity

1. Regular passport
2. Diplomatic passport
3. Official passport

Indian passport is valid for 10 years. Both the date of issue and the date of expiry are mentioned in the passport.

Any documents required for online Passport application

As proof of birth

• Aadhaar Card / e-Aadhaar.
• Voter Identity Card (EPIC) issued by Election Commission of India.
• PAN Card (PAN) issued by Income Tax Department.
• Driving license.
• Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or Municipal Corporation or any other valid authority.
• School Transfer Certificate / School Leaving Certificate / 10th Class Admission Certificate.
• Policy bond issued by Sarvajanin Jeevan Bima Nigam / Company, where the date of birth of the policy holder is written.
• Declaration letter on official letterhead of a valid Orphanage / Hostel as proof of applicant's date of birth.

As proof of contractor

• Aadhaar Card
• Rent Agreement.
• Voter ID Card (EPIC).
• Water, telephone or electricity bills.
• Income Tax File (IT File).
• Evidence letter written on official letterhead of a valid company or office.
• Passport copy of spouse or partner (first and last page with applicant's name and family details as spouse of passport holder). In this case the current address of both should be same.
• Copy of parents' passport (first and last page) or copy of bank account passbook (RBI approved public sector bank, valid Indian private bank or approved local rural bank) of parents in case of minor and minor children.

How to Apply for Passport Online

By following this procedure you can easily apply for a passport at your home. This service is available in all states of the country. According to the latest rules of the Ministry of External Affairs, it is very easy to apply for and receive a passport from anywhere in India.

Visit Official Passport Seva Website –

(https://portal1.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink/) Click on 'Register New User'.

1. Select your respective passport office. Then, enter your details as required.
2. Create a login ID and password. Select your hint question and write the answer for it. Verify the details and click on 'Register'.
3. After filling the information and registering, you have to log in with that ID and password.
4. After login, apply for new passport link and ensure that passport application has never been done before.
5. Fill the required details as per the form and click above to submit. Click on 'View application form shown' and schedule an appointment.

Set Appointment Schedule by Payment

Make the required payment online. Next click on 'Pay and Schedule Appointment'. After clicking on it, a page will be directed to select the payment mode. Online payment is mandatory for appointment booking at any Passport Seva Kendra / Passport Office.

• Then the appointment details will be sent to the registered phone number through SMS.
• For physical verification visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) / Local Passport Office (RPO) where the appointment is booked. Carry the copies of the documents you have submitted while filling up the form.
